Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation identified Iron Age features in one trench, with an undated feature in an adjacent trench. This area lay outside the area of the preceding geophysical survey, so the extent of the site is not known.
The features included a curvilinear gully which may the remains of a roundhouse, as well as a small number of pits and a linear gully. All the features contained small quantities of Iron Age pottery. Small quantities of animal bone and heat cracked stone were also recovered.

{2} - Excavation of the area identified features such as a trackway, ditches and pits dating to the Middle to Late Iron Age. The trackway contained sherds of late Iron Age pottery, animal bone fragments and copper-alloy waste. The ditches contained small quantities of Iron Age pottery and animal bone. The area also contains a large sub-rectangular pit that was characterised to be a quarry pit that was later backfilled with topsoil/discarded material and levelled using sand. The pit contained 72 sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery. No definitive early Iron age features were identified but it is possible that later activity may have disturbed or truncated these beyond recognition.
