Full Description
{1} Archaeological excavation identified two SFB's. The material recovered from the fills suggests that both buildings went out of use before the later 5th century. The pottery, registered finds and animal bone waste suggests a possible distinction in use between the two buildings- one may have been domestic, with activities including possible brewing (a number of pottery sherds were characteristically heavily degraded on the interior surface) , craft manufacture including textiles and cooking, the other may have had a more utilitarian function including storage in jars and meat preparation. The pottery assemblage had few joining sherds suggesting it was the result of secondary deposition, such material from a domestic midden being dumped in the SFB hollow after it had gone out use.
One of the SFBs had been truncated by a gully aligned south-east by north-west which contained animal bone and pottery dating to the 7th or 8th century. It may be a remnant of a later Saxon field system.
