Full Description
{1} Archaeological observation of foundation trenches for a new house identified a number of large pits, with the majority probably dating between 1100 and 1450. The pits were generally shallow, only excavated down to the superficial geology, not penetrating the hard bedrock. The purpose of the pits is likely to be to exploit the broken up ironstone for smelting.
