Monument record 4763/0/2 - Probable late Iron Age/Roman ditched enclosure, Pury End Quarry

Geophysical survey identified the corner of a probable ditched enclosure on the northern edge of the survey area. The feature has been, at least partially, truncated by later quarrying.

{1} Geophysical survey undertaken in 2018 identified an L-shaped section of ditch with a rounded corner near to the northern edge of the survey area. A large anomaly immediately to the north is typical of a backfilled quarry pit likely to be post-medieval in date. It cuts across the enclosure ditch. Further backfilled quarry pits lie to the east.

{2} Geophysical survey undertaken in 2024 detected the L-shaped section of ditch that was initally found in the 2018 survey. It is probable that the quarrying in question is shallow, exploratory surface extraction, therefore, the small portion of the anomaly that continues into the quarried area probably represents the lower part of the ditch which lay below the maximum depth of the quarry.
