Monument record 3765/0/48 - Site of medieval building, Pipe Lane

Archaeological observation in 2005 identified the stone wall footings and mortar floor of a building comprising at least two rooms on the Pipe Lane frontage. The building appears to have been demolished by the late 14th century

{1} The limited excavation carried out at 5-6 Pipe Lane as part of the new access has revealed archaeological deposits connected with the shrunken medieval village of Warkton. A single sherd of St. Neots ware indicates 11th or 12th century activity. The date of construction of the stone cottage fronting onto the lane has not been established, as no sealed contexts pre-dating its construction were located. However, it seems unlikely to have been earlier than the 13th century, while material from the cleaning of the compacted external surface suggests that it had been abandoned and levelled by the late 14th century. The building evidently comprised at least two narrow rooms, and probably marks the origin of occupation along the street frontage.
