Monument record 1229/10 - Redmoor Copse and Hill Copse

Area of medieval woodland with earthworks of boundary bank and ditch. Part of Whittlewood Forest

{1} Redmoor Copse is Rodmoor Coppice in 1790 (hreod, mor-reed swamp). The ground, despite a drainage system, remains very wet. Redmoor Copse is divided into two blocks by a recent ride, which seems to be the only recent addition. To the south, east and north the medieval coppice banks and ditches are well preserved. The eastern boundary, also the Deanshanger/Potterspury parish boundary, the earthworks comprise a double ditch and bank with a berm of 10-20m between the ditches. Redmoor and Hill Copse are divided by a medieval ride, possibly straightened at a later date to provide a southern vista from the Lodge. At SP 740424 a second bank can be traced. No other medieval boundaries survive in Hill Copse.

No internal features of archaeological significance were noted during the survey.
