Abstract/Summary
An archaeological fieldwork survey of the major blocks of woodland on the Wakefield Lodge Estate was made in January 2001. Previous information from archaeological records and documentary sources was checked, and all the woodland compartments were systematically searched for sites and earthworks, both the linear banks of medieval coppices and the remains of features likely to be of a different date. The survey revealed a medieval woodland management system comprising major coppice bank and ditch sequences which has been severely mutilated y subsequent landscaping of the parkland around the current house. Other archaeological evidence, for instance prehistoric and Roman settlement sites, are likely to exist but would require more intensive and intrusive survey strategies to identify.
