Full Description
{1} Trial trench evaluation was carried out in 2006 in advance of the construction of a new doctor's surgery on Saffron Road. Despite the 1591 map of the town indicating the presence of buildings on the plot at this date, the only medieval feature identified by the evaluation was a small, disturbed pit near the Saffron Road frontage containing Lyveden/Stanion pottery dating to the late 12th century and a small quantity of animal bone. The lack of any features relating to the map and the disturbed nature of the only archaeological feature on site suggests that the site has been largely truncated by later activities. The remains of a 19th/20th-century limestone surface was probably related to the occupation of College Street.
