Full Description
{1} A linear arrangement of enclosures is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs taken in June 2011, in the course of the annual English Heritage reconnaissance programme. Visible within a single arable field (but presumably continuing futher in both directions), the cropmarks are visible for a distance of circa 350 metres, the enclosures seemingly all attached to one side of an irrergular linear ditch. However, the primacy of linear over enclosures is far from certain. The enclosures vary markedly in size and shape, and there is one clear entrance of causeway through the linear.
{1a-2} As described at {1} above, a complex of accreted circular, D-shaped, curvilinear and subcircular ditched enclosures of various sizes of probable Iron Age or Roman date is linked by a sinuous external ditch are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field about 468 metres SE of Newlands Farm and centred at SP 92515 59516, the cropmarks extend over an area about 345 metres SW-NE and 143 metres NW-SE. The sinuous ditch is up to 5 metres wide and extends 392 metres SW-NE from SP 92406 59413 to SP 92590 59701. From its NW facing side are attached at least 10 accreted enclosures of varying sizes and shapes, as well as a probable ring ditch, the probable drip gully of a former round house.
