Full Description

{1} A level 1 (photographic) historic building survey was undertaken as part of a programme of redevelopment.

{2} The barn approximately 40m east of Green Farmhouse forms the southern end of a range of farm outbuildings forming the east side of a courtyard. It is a former threshing barn, built of coursed limestone, with a limestone slate roof laid to diminishing courses. It has opposed threshing doorways, set beneath deep timber lintels at wall plate level, and slit breathers below the level of cross-shaped end plates to the rods. The barn is of early 19th century date, being built sometime between 1811 and 1858. The building is also present on the 1886 OS map. There are a number of listed buildings nearby, including Green Farmhouse, Stable, and Shepherdess Cottage with attached barn, all listed at Grade II.

The barn approximately 40m east of Green Farmhouse is a large example of the building type, and is typically plain in appearance. It lacks distinctive masonry or roof carpentry detailing. The interior of the building is now used for storage, and is a single space, without lofts, doors or other features usually found within intact examples of the building type.

The building was surveyed as part of a defined area survey of the Ashton Estate.
