Full Description

{1} Archaeological investigation was undertaken prior to the conversion of a disused building to the rear of Stockwell House into domestic use. A small excavation against the west elevation of the house identified a roughly cobbled area and forge, while a similar area excavated against the eastern elevation identified a former privy and stone-lined cess pit. Pottery from the site dated to the 19th-20th centuries.
During the first half of the 20th century local accounts indicate that the yard to the south of Stockwell House and to the north and west of the annex was used as a builder’s yard. An assemblage of 19 architectural stone fragments were collected from around the site during the course of the investigation; all were sections of mouldings from around window openings with flat splays dating from the late 16th to the early 18th centuries. It is possible that they were brought to the yard for some reason. The nearby Dower House and Hall at Fawsley are possible origins for the stone.
