Monument record 5832/0/2 - Possible Roman or medieval plot boundary, south of Rochester Close

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological evaluation undertaken in 2019 identified a ditch, aligned east to west, which contained very abraded Roman pottery and tile. Due to the worn nature of the pottery the ditch may be of a later date, possibly a plot boundary dating to the 11th-12th centuries, similar to ditches found to the north. Subsequent archaeological observation during development did not identify any further features.

Full Description

{1} Archaeological evaluation undertaken in 2019 prior to propsoed development identified a ditch aligned east to west. The fill contained a heavily abraded rim sherd of Romano-British Oxford Fine Reduced ware and a similarly abraded fragment of Romano-British box flue tile which are likely to be residual. The extremely abraded nature of the Romano-British pottery indicates a later date for ditch, and it is possible that this feature is associated with those identified to the north and therefore potentially 11th -12th century in origin.

A further linear feature identified during the evaluation contained 20th-century material and was interpreted as a machine-cut service trench.
