Full Description
{1} Archaeological building recording of two brick-built ranges of barns at Winwick Grange prior to conversion to residential use. Both are tiled with Welsh slate. Structurally, the buildings are of a common design. There is evidence of partial retention of an earlier building in the east-west range, probably 18th century in date , confirming early cartographic sources as well as evidence of mid to late 19th century rebuilding, a common trait on Midlands farm complexes. The earlier building makes extensive use of decorative flared header bricks, which would have made for a striking looking building, suggesting a farm of some status at the time. Evidence of this re-building can also be seen in the outline of an earlier pitched gable within the current west gable (Figure 10). The steep pitch suggests this original roof may have been under thatch.A Suffolk latch used on the central door is marked with a Saltire, which originated in the 17th-century as Apotropaic, or ritual, marks.
The second range appears to be a late 19th-century rebuild of an earlier range according to cartographic sources.
