Abstract/Summary

This document is an archaeological standing building survey of outbuildings associated with Winwick Grange, Winwick, Northamptonshire (SP 61819 74131), commissioned from Archaeological Building Recording Services (ABRS) by J. Mills & son in advance of the proposed conversion of the buildings to residential use. Grange Farm is an interesting range of buildings built on an established farmstead dating to at least the 18th century. Winwick was formerly owned by the Cistercian Abbey of Pipewell. The exact location of the original grange is unknown. It is possible that the current Winwick Grange may be an indication of the location of the Grange, however, there is no pre-20th century documentary reference to the farm being called “Grange”. Structurally, the buildings are of a common design. There is evidence of an earlier, 18th century building within the complex as well as evidence of extensive mid to late 19th century rebuilding. The layout however, is un-common, consisting of an irregular loose yard on a sloping site. Later animal sheds are located upslope to the earlier barn, suggesting animal rearing replaced arable. It appears that these later ranges were constructed following an existing boundary which dictated the current layout. The archive will be retained by ABRS under the temporary site code 2017-WGWN until deposition with Northamptonshire County Council can be arranged under the Event Number ENN108747.
