Monument record 4760/0/14 - Medieval-post-medieval activity, south of Lumber Lane
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological excavation of three house plots in 2012-3 revealed activity dating from the 12th century onwards. The site lay on the fringes of the settlement in the medieval period and seems initially to have been used for waste disposal from the 12th century and into the 14th century. It was subsequently taken into agricultural use, probably due to the contraction of the settlement at this time, with the identification of field boundaries and a cobbled trackway. Two possible enclosures may have been used as sheep pens. During the post-medieval period further field boundaries were created, as well as a pond and stone-lined drains.

Full Description
{1} Archaeological excavation of three house plots in 2012-3 revealed activity dating from the 12th century onwards.
The earliest activity was a small number of unstratified pieces of worked flint and sherds of Iron Age/Roman pottery. The earliest archaeological features were a number pits concentrated in Plot 2 and dating to the 12th-late 14 centuries. One of the pits contained a large quantity of pottery dating to the 13th century, two nails and an iron vessel rim. The site appeared to have been on the fringes of the settlement in the medieval period and the pits seem to have been used for waste disposal.
