Full Description
{1} Level 2 building recording survey of a farm building at Highfield House prior to conversion to residential use. The structure is rectangular in plan and consists of two-storeys and is built from coursed Ironstone rubble with lime mortar. The roof is gabled under contemporary concrete pantiles,
whilst the roof structure sits upon a modern brick wall plate, with stone kneelers at either gable, while the roof purlins protrude though each gable. Located within the roofs north elevation is a contemporary roof light.
The building would have originally functioned as a combination barn, with a main threshing area of two bays and a two-storey granary to the north east of the threshing barn area, along with a further principal granary area directly above the barn. The date of this building is most likely contemporary with the main house and being mid to late 18th century. Very few original fixtures or fittings have been retained, interior surfaces have been covered with modern surfaces, whilst the internal arrangements have on the most been retained, all original floors and roof structures are of post-war origins. The brick steps leading to the upper storey of the granary were replaced some years ago, whilst the windows in the south elevation are most likely not part of the original granary function, however, the upper window openings could have originally functioned as ‘pitch holes’ but may have been re-positioned during the insertion of the replacement brick wall plate.
