Full Description

{1} Archaeological investigation, comprising geophysical survey, trial trench excavation and excavation, identified a Romano-British enclosure system. The ditches making up the enclosures are in two phases, an earlier enclosure in the west of the site which is then supplanted by a later enclosure which extends further to the east. These stratigraphic relationships are in keeping with the dating evidence from the pottery, placing the earlier enclosure in the mid-1st century and the later enclosure in the late 1st/2nd century, although it should be noted that the bulk of the pottery was recovered from the western side of the site, with none retrieved from the eastern side.
The use of the enclosures is unclear. Whilst there is no clear evidence of structural remains,
isolated post-holes have been identified, and multiple pits with significant quantities of
domestic waste indicate nearby occupation. Based on finds distribution this is likely to have
been in the western side of the site.
