Monument record 8824/2 - Probable Iron Age/Roman settlement, west of Woodford Road

A rectangular enclosure of probable Iron Age/Roman date is visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken on 20th June 2011. The enclosure, which is bisected by a modern road, is defined by a broad ditch and aligned north-west south-east. It is located to the south of an open settlement (UID 1582885) but there is no clear association between the features. To the south of the enclosure is a field boundary which is 'U' shaped in plan. This shares an alignment with the enclosure so is likely to be associated with it. Traces of a probable fine ditched enclosure can be seen within the area defined by the boundary.

The enclosure is centred at SP 5367 5090 and is bisected by a modern road. It is defined by a broad ditch, aligned north-west south-east and measures approximately 50m by 45m. It is located to the south of an open settlement (HER number 8824/1) but there is no clear association between the features. To the south of the enclosure is a field boundary which is 'U' shaped in plan. This shares an alignment with the enclosure so is likely to be associated with it. Traces of a probable fine ditched enclosure can be seen within the area defined by the boundary at SP 53725077.
