Full Description

{1} Heritage assessment of the farm complex was undertaken ahead of planning proposals. The double-height barn, built of limestone rubble, is the earliest element of the Farm and can be securely dated to c1775, the date of inclosure. The southern half of what is now the estate worker's cottage was built onto the barn, probably for a resident stockman, perhaps in the first quarter of the 19th century. The central range was added by 1817 (if the early Ordnance survey mapping is correct) and the remainder of the buildings added in a piecemeal fashion over the course of the century. By 1884, the farm was fully developed as a large E-plan complex.

{2}An archaeological building recording was carried out by Pre-Develop Archaeology in 2019. The building formed part of an unlisted E-plan farmstead, originating as an out-barn constructed around the time of enclosure in 1775, with subsequent adaptation to residential use. The recording established that the cottage developed through several phases, including an early structure associated with the original threshing barn, mid-19th-century domestic adaptation with the insertion of chimneys and lean-to extensions, and substantial refurbishment and amalgamation into a single dwelling during the mid to late 20th century. Due to the extent of demolition prior to survey, the recording relied on surviving fabric, site inspection and photographic evidence, but was sufficient to demonstrate the architectural evolution of the building.
