Monument record 4819/2 - Probable Iron Age/early Roman site, south of Warkton Common

Geophysical survey identified a trapezoidal ditched enclosure, which was confirmed by subsequent trial trench excavation. Iron Age and possible late Iron Age/early Roman pottery was recovered from the ditch fills.

{2,3} A ditched enclosure identified during geophysical survey was targeted by subsequent trial trench excavation. Only the eastern side of the enclosure was conclusively identified. The enclosure was trapezoidal in plan and measured approximately 20m by 18m at its widest and longest points. No internal divisions or other features were noted. A further ditch in an adjacent trench indicates the activity continues further north than indicated by the geophysical survey. A near complete vessel in a highly fragmented state was recovered, although only a broad Iron Age date could be assigned. Late Iron Age 'pre-Belgic' pottery was also recovered.
