Abstract/Summary
Magnitude Surveys was commissioned to assess the subsurface archaeological potential of c38ha area of land at Grafton Underwood. A fluxgate gradiometer survey was successfully completed across the survey area and the geophysical survey has detected a range of different anomalies comprising anomalies of archaeological, modern and agricultural origin. Archaeological activity has been identified in the form of two enclosures and associated pit-like anomalies. Anomalies of modern origin are related to the WII Royal Air Force (RAF) airfield, which includes runways, dispersal areas and demolition debris related to structures associated with airfield activity such as a mast, a control tower and a pillbox (the latter still present on site). Agricultural activity relates to historical use of the land with extensive ridge and furrow detected across the site and former field boundaries, including a former historic avenue. A couple of anomalies have been classified as 'undetermined' and may either relate to airfield or agricultural activity.
