Full Description
{1-3} A possible Iron Age and/or Roman ditched ‘D’ shaped enclosure is recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. The enclosure measures about 25 metres by 25 metres and has a possible entrance gap to the north. It is centred at SP 9980 6451.
The site probably indicates settlement and may be linked to other enclosures and land division to the south west (Monument 1589688) and west (Monument 1589691).
{1a} A D-shaped ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field about 1222 metres SSE of the sewage pumping station off Avenue Road and centred at SP 99805 64519, the ditch is up to 2.2 metres wide and encloses an area about 22 metres SSE-NNW and 18 metres WNW-ESE at its widest. There appears to be a gap of about 3 metres at the apex of the curvilinear ditch, facing NW, that may be an entrance. Some 50 metres to the W is an irregularly shaped macula of uncertain date and function about 8 metres in diameter at its widest.
