Monument record 5801/1 - Probable Romano-British settlement, north-east of Danesmoor Spinney

Geophysical survey identified an area of probable Romano-British settlement comprising a complex of rectilinear and curvilinear enclosures as well as a possible road. Excavations revealed a series of ditch enclosures, sub enclosures and pits of generally later Roman date.

{1} Geophysical survey ahead of HS2 identified an area of probable Romano-British settlement comprising rectilinear and curvilinear enclosures. Some of the rectilinear enclosures appear to be double-ditched. To the west of the settlement, two parallel ditches may define a road or trackway, although the anomalies were less clear and may be of an agricultural origin.

{2} Excavations revealed a series of ditch enclosures, sub-enclosures, structures and pits of generally later Roman date. The phasing is based upon the stratigraphic and spatial analysis with the series of linear boundaries and sub-divisions (Phase 1) developing into a more substantial enclosure surrounding structures, corn dryers and burials
(Phase 2).
