Full Description

{2}These photos show the main Griggs factory which is going to be demolished.

{3} A two-story building on the left side of the factory complex with a row of sheds running along the back of the complex and then four sheds parallel to the road on the right hand side [listed separately as 3250/18/5]. The central area at the front is occupied by two purpose built houses. According to information given me by local residents, this factory may be demolished in the near future. The building on the left was probably originally Rivetts, and was later incorporated into Luther Austin. Backing on to this building in Backway is another redbrick factory which was occupied by Bayes Brothers. The factory in Eastfield Road (1915) included two houses fronting on to the road one for the manager and one for the owner, with direct access from the rear of the properties into the factory. It is possible that a number of the houses in Eastfield Road may have been built specifically for workers.

{4} Plain factory facing south onto Eastfield Road. It comprises a main, five-bay range of two-storeys and a small basement, a two-storey rear range and four single-storey bays of north-lit sheds, parallel to the main range. All these elements appear to be contemporary. In the main range, the eastern bay includes a goods entrance at ground-floor level and a taking-in door on the first floor.
