Full Description

{2}The photographs are taken within an area of Wollaston which seems to date principally from circa 1880. Photographs 19,20 and 21 are illustrative, indicating how demolitions may compromise the character of the area.,{1}The Griggs factory on Eastfield Road, Wollaston, was visited in response to an application for demolition to make way for new houses. The factory, and its surrounding area close to the historic centre of Wollaston, contain a number of buildings which are (or were) related to the manufacture of shoes.
{3}Of the sixteen shoe manufacturers who had factories in Wollaston when the boot and shoe industry was at it peak only two, Griggs and NPS, are still in operation today. Amy Whichello, writing in 1893, notes that the Boot and Shoe trade had started with hand-sewn army boots in 1860 and increased for the next thirty years, particularly between 1880 and 1890 – at least 5000 pairs of boots were being made every week and several factories has been erected.
