Full Description

{1} Owners from 1873 Attenborough & Co., from 1899 Attenborough & Timms, from 11th March 1909 Brixworth Ironstone Co. Ltd., the last company becoming a subsidiary of Clay Cross Co.Ltd. From 25th March 1928 closure occuring on the 4th October 1947. The quarries started from an area north of the church at Brixworth at the contour of 400ft and a tramway was laid to the LNWR line north of Brixworth station at the level of 250ft. In 1894 when the original leases were due to expire further leases on 51 acres to the east of the main Northampton to Market Harborough road were obtained and a tunnel under the road was made to connect up with the new quarries. Workings then gradually moved eastwards. The quarries were given the following names Wood's deep (1910), Bull Leys (1915), Wood's south (1916), Bear Croft (1910), Mill Close (1910), Isham (1936). The last was completely in the parish of Scaldwell and the most northly point of the quarries. During WWII there was intense activity in the quarries. On 2nd November 1946 there was considered to be reserves for seven years if extracted at 1000 tons per week, however the equipment was worn out and it was decided to close the quarries; this occurred on 4th October 1947.
