Map

Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} Owners from 1853 Thomas Butlin & Co.Ltd., and from 1861 Butlin Bevan & Co. until closure in about 1875. The full title of the company being Wellingborough East End Ironworks & Quarries. The quarries were started in the Finedon and Cross road areas for the use at the blast furnaces on the same site. In 1859 a further 56 acres were leased between Mill Road and Finedon Road and on the west side and immediately adjacent to the Midland Railway line. Another parcel of land was leased from the Church commissioners on the25th March 1862. There are no records of tramways being used on either site. It is presumed that horses were used but tramways cannot be ruled out. It also possible that gravity workings were used with horses to pull the wagons back. The East End workings were vacated by Butlins 1875.

{3} Report shows that the area of quarrying is more extensive than has been mapped on the SMR. Needs updating.
