SNN104811 - Desk-Based Assessment for Land East of Eastfield Road, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire Archaeology carried out an archaeological survey comprising desk-based assessment, site walkover, and a watching brief during the excavation of geotechnical test pits on land east of Eastfield Road, Wellingborough. It is a large site that has an industrial history of quarrying for both ironstone and clay, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with extensions to the railway line on the eastern side of the area. Since then it has become an area of allotments, commercial and industrial properties surrounded on three sides by residential properties, and open ground. The Sites and Monuments Record contains no record of finds of prehistoric or later date either within the site or from its immediate vicinity, and areas of urban development and mineral extraction were not subject to archaeological investigation. Quarrying was extensive across the development area and it seems probable that only evidence of the industrial usage of the site may survive.
