Monument record 895/0/32 - Iron Age or Roman burials, east of Watling Street

Please read our .

Summary

Excavation by CLASP in 2022 identified two skeletons in a pit located to the east of Watling Street and south-west of Bannaventa. The skeletons appeared to have been thrown into the pit rather than afforded a formal burial. No dating evidence was found, but the pit was truncated by a Roman ditch, so it is likely that they are of a Roman, or perhaps, Iron Age, date.

Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation in 2019 and excavation in 2022 by CLASP of a large, late Roman timber structure [report awaited] identified a large pit within which two burials were found. The burials were of a female (aged 26-45) and an adolescent (aged 14-17). They were not in a carefully constructed grave and appear to have been deposited without care and respect. No indications of death were present. No dating evidence, other than intrusive Roman pottery from a later feature that truncated the pit, was found.
