Full Description

{1} Geophysical survey and trial trench excavation undertaken as part of HS2 identified part of an enclosure system. None of the linear features contained any finds, although a possibly associated pit contained a small assemblage of mid-late Iron Age pottery. This group of features appears to form an irregular pattern of linear features, possibly representing several phases of activity.

{2} The archaeology uncovered in the excavation comprised an enclosure system, associated bounaries and later land divisions. The pottery recovered from the site were of Roman date and possible early Medieval date. The enclosure system, based on form and the small artefactual assemblage, has been interpreted as Roman in date. A
ditch located towards the northwestern corner of the site was radiocarbon dated to the middle Saxon period introducing the possibility that other ditches across the site may date to this period.
