Full Description

{1} Archaeological investigation was carried out after the demolition of the library and council offices and prior to the construction of the cinema. A number of medieval burgage plot boundaries were identified; ditches aligned on surviving boundaries on the High Street to the south. There were also a large number of backfilled clay extraction pits, perhaps related to the construction of buildings on the High Street frontage, as well as isolated postholes and pits. There was no structural evidence identified within the site. The artefactual evidence indicates that the main period of occupation took place from the 12th-14th centuries with a lesser presence from the 10th century.
Animal remains included sheep/goat, cattle and fish and oyster. Cereal grains were dominated by bread wheat, as well as hulled barley and oats.
