Monument record 8773/1 - Iron Age/Roman settlement, south of Wood Lodge Farm
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Geophysical survey has identified a series of curvilinear and rectilinear enclosures arranged either side of a trackway which has previously been identified as a cropmark. Trial trench evaluation results corresponded with the known anomalies from the geophysical survey.

Full Description
{1} Numerous enclosures are present and are possibly accessed by a central double ditched trackway. One trackway is visible as a cropmark and extends north to south, a second trackway branches off from the first trackway heading towards an anomaly in North-West alignment. There are enclosures that appear to take two distinct forms: those to the south and west appear to be rectilinear and those to the east appear to be curvilinear. Within the enclosures appear to be several sub-enclosures, potential ring ditches and discrete anomalies, which suggest settlement activity. The report dates the settlement to being of a possible Iron Age/Roman date based on the composition of the activity found.
{2} {4} The site was considered for scheduling, but after examining all the records and other relevant information and having carefully considered the national importance of the site, it is considered that the criteria for scheduling are not fulfilled. This is a settlement of local and regional interest only and its interest should be managed locally.
{3} Most of the features in the central and eastern extent of Field 1 corresponded with known anomalies detected during the previous geophysical survey. Numerous enclosures are present in this area and their access was probably associated with two double ditched trackways. The enclosures adjacent to the trackways and in the close vicinity appear to take two distinct forms, those to the south-east corner of Field 1 typically being rectilinear in shape and those to the north-eastern corner of Field 1 being more curvilinear. Within the enclosures are several sub enclosures, and discrete geophysical anomalies suggestive of settlement activity. In addition, circular or penannular anomalies were also identified during the geophysical survey. Most of these anomalies correlated with features uncovered and investigated during the trenching evaluation.
