Full Description

{1} - The survey identified several archaeological features along the length of the proposed pipeline route. The ring ditch detected in the north-west of the survey area is located on a false crest of the valley and possibly represents a barrow of prehistoric date. The possible three-sided enclosure and long sinuous ditch of Site C remain unaffected by modern utilities. Apart from the ring ditch in Site A, no features in Sites A-C display clearly dateable characteristics but an approximate date of lron Age to Roman can be assumed since they underly the extant medieval ridge and furrow earthworks. The majority of the southern field was surveyed in 2010 as part of a larger survey and was consequently not included within this survey. The previous survey detected two small 'D'-shaped enclosures set along the length of a curvilinear ditch with evidence of possible roundhouses. Subsequent trial trench evaluation confirmed that the features were of Later lron Age date.
