Please read our .

Summary

Geophysical survey identified anomalies of probable archaeological origin including a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. During subsequent trial trench excavation several ditches were recorded which corresponded to the enclosure. A single sherd of probable late Iron Age pottery was found in the ditch fills. Although the geophysical survey suggested the presence of internal features, no other archaeological features were identified in the trenches.

Full Description

{1} In 2023, geophysical survey identified anomalies of probable archaeological origin. In the north-east of the site were anomalies that have been interpreted to be a sub-rectangular enclosures with internal and external features, which are likely to be pits and associated features. The morphology of the anomalies suggests an Iron Age date.

{2} Trial trench excavation confirmed the presence of a ditched enclosure. A single sherd of probable late Iron Age pottery was recovered. Several other undated ditches were identified in adjacent trenches and these are likely to be contemporary. However, the lack of material artefacts suggest that the enclosure had an agricultural purpose.
