Monument record 3272/0/35 - Post-medieval brickfield, north of Harrold Road

Please read our .

Summary

A post-medieval clay extraction site is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data. Located in a field on the corner of Church Lane and Harrold Road, Bozeat, the rectangular field is almost entirely covered in irregular scoops and ridges from the clay extraction, as well as a linear bank along the east side. The earthworks appears to be grassed over, suggesting clay had not been extracted for some time prior to 1949. Nor does a brickfield appear on any editions of OS map, suggesting its operation predates 1885.

Full Description

{1-2} A post-medieval clay extraction site is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in a field on the corner of Church Lane and Harrold Road, Bozeat and centred at SP 90757 59243, the rectangular field is 11,446 square metres in area and is almost entirely covered in irregular scoops and ridges from the clay extraction, as well as a linear bank along the east side. At the north end of the field, aerial photographs taken in 1949 show a rectangular building about 12 x 4 metres that may be associated, but may be agricultural. The field of irregular earthworks appears to be grassed over as a pathway is visible crossing it, suggesting it had not been extracting clay for some time prior to 1949. Nor does a brickfield appear on any editions of OS map, suggesting its operation predates 1885.
