Monument record 9111 - Possible undated field system, east of Raunds road

Geophysical survey identified anomalies of archaeological interest that have been interpreted as two fragmentary field systems.

{1} Geophysical survey undetaken identified anomalies of likely and possible archaeological interest. The strongest repsonses have been interpreted to be a field system. There is little evidence to suggest that the enclosed area of these anomalies contain any internal features. The survey also found pit-like responses but these are most likely to be natural activity.

{2} Trial trench evaluation was undertaken and confirmed the archaeological origin of some of the geophysical anomalies and also located a number of archaeological deposits not identified by the geophysical survey. Parallel ditches in trehcnes 1 and 2 contained medieval pottery and could represent field boundaries or an enclosure of that period. Another ditch found in trench 5, which based on the geophysical survey could likely be the third side of the enclosure. No other features could be dated but based on these results the site does appear to have moderate archaeological potential for the late Saxon or early Medieval period.
