Full Description

{1} In July 2024, a historic building recording was undertaken of a detached stone-built dwelling known as No. 2 Lodge Cottages. The report found evidence for the cottage to have originated in the late 17th century or early 18th century. The evidence of which laid in its external walls in particular the gable ends which reveal the former outline of a steeply-pitched roof, which was undoubtedly thatched. The earlier form of the cottage was constructed in coursed limestone rubble, banded with ironstone at regularly-spaced intervals. It was either two-storeyed or single storey with attic rooms, the latter seeming more likely. Inside the cottage, little of the original structure is extant. In the 19th century, a small outbuilding range was attached to the SE elevation, which most likely probably included a privy. Examination of the roof-space revealed that the upper storey was elevated in the very late 19th century or the early decades of the 20th century. Evidence from the bricks used, it is likely that the cottage was converted to its present from around the turn of the 20th century.
