Abstract/Summary
In July 2024 a Historic Building Record was made of a detached stone-built, two-storey dwelling known as No. 2 Lodge Cottages at Lower End, an outlier of the Northamptonshire village of Brafield-on-the-Green. The recording was carried out in accordance with a planning condition, prior to the building’s demolition and construction of a replacement dwelling. The record presents a descriptive account of the building’s structural characteristics, an analysis of its chronological development, as far as may be ascertained from ‘as found’ observations, and limited research of its historic context. The house originated either as a two, or one-and-a-half, storeyed stone-bult cottage with a thatched roof. Dated dwellings in the locality with comparable characteristics suggest that it dates to the late 17th, or early 18th century. Analysis reveals that the building underwent significant modification, probably at some juncture in the first two decades of the 20th century. The report provides a descriptive and illustrative account of observations by means of digital photographs and scale drawings.
