Full Description

{1} A memorial to the west of the crash site records the names of the three aircrew who lost their lives nearby on 22nd December 1943.

{2} The Lancaster DV361 had been severely damaged 18/19 November 1943 during a night raid on Berlin and on 22nd December 1943 it was taken for a cross-country test flight after being repaired. There was an engine fire which could not be extinguished and the crew were ordered to bale out. Four crew members were successful, but three were not and died when the aircraft crashed. The four who survived this crash were later killed in action.
