Building record MNN173370 - Thomas A Becket public house, St James' Road

Formerly The Green Man. A partially demolished outbuilding adjoining to the south has a raised cruck structure and probably dates to the 18th century. Included on the WNC Local List.

{1} A raised cruck structure noted forming the gable of a single storey stone building at the junction of St James Road and St James Mill Road in the curtilage of the 'Green Man' public house. This building appears to be part of a barn which extended north and south of the present structure but has been reduced in size by redevelopment of the whole site and later road widening of St James Mill Road.
Part of the later history of the site has been obtained by studying the deeds of 48 and 50 St James Road (demolished) which state that they were constructed out of part of the stables and other buildings adjoining and belonging to the Green Man Public House formerly known as Toll house by John Collier. John Collier was involved in the Harborough Arms during the period 1861 to 1866 and it is possible that 48 and 50 were converted during this period. The cruck structure likely formed one of the out-buildings of the Toll House public house which derived its name from the toll gate at the junction of Harlestone Road and Weedon Road. The outbuilding is definitely pre-1860 and an 18th-century date seems probable.
