Full Description
{1} A small medieval hall house comprising three bays with two surviving cruck trusses. The trusses have elbowed cruck blades jointed by mortice and tenons into a saddle, which originally carried a short king post supporting a ridge piece (now missing). Trenches just above the collar carried side purlins, each pegged into the cruck. Angled trenches in the outer face of the side purlins originally held windbraces. All faces were heavily sooted, indicating smoke from the open hall was allowed to drift upwards. The position of the cross-passage or details of the service end are not known. Due to lack of defining features all that can be said of the dating is that it is earlier than 1500. Considerable modification in the 17th-century included an extra bay to the west and a large stone stack inserted in the original west wall. An inglenook in the new room contained curious inglenook seats; behind one was a bread oven and below the other a possible prooving oven.
