Full Description

{1} Owners 1939 Naylor Benzon Mining Co.Ltd; from 3rd January 1951 Nassington Barrowden Mining Co.Ltd closure in 1970. The original owners were importers of foreign ore and with the advent of W.W.II it was necessary to find another source of iron ore. Production started in the summer of 1939 north of the Peterborough to Rugby railway line. This pit eventually reached to Kingscliffe to Wansford road. A later quarry was opened south of the line and bordered by the Apethorpe to Nassington road. In 1969 Nassington was the last quarry still to be using steam engines and it became a mecca for steam enthusiasts and continued to do so until it's closure in late 1970.
