Monument record 1160/0/587 - Medieval occupation, Mounts car park

Please read our .

Summary

Four test pits were excavated in the southern part of Mounts car park. Medieval deposits were identified in two of the test pits; part of a building possibly associated with the Whitefriars precinct and part of a clay floor. Medieval deposits were not reached in the other two test pits, but probably survive at a level deeper than could be reached.

Full Description

{1} Four test pits were excavated in the southern part of Mounts car park as part of a wider evaluation. The test pits only sampled the very top of medieval features due to the extensive build-up of modern deposits. One pit contained the remains of a building that may be associated with the former Carmelite Friary, the Whitefriars. In another test pit a possible 13th century clay floor and other medieval deposits were truncated by a later medieval/post-medieval gully. Deposits in both these test pits were sealed by 16th century demolition rubble, perhaps related to the dissolution of the friary. In the other two test pits were also layers of demolition rubble of perhaps the same origin; earlier medieval remains were not exposed due to the considerable depth of the demolition layers.
