Full Description

{1} Further evidence of buildings including walls, mortar floors and decorated tiles were found in trial trenching in 1974 between Kerr Street and Park Street (SP75626090 – 75636086). However, a trench on the area between Victoria Street and Kerr Street (SP 75566093-75586084) revealed an area devoid of buildings. [HER note: later evaluation immediately to south did identify probable buildings- see associated record]

{3} Trial excavation on the site of Whitefriars located parts of the friary building but the deep Victorian cellerage encountered suggests that most of the archaeological levels have already been destroyed.

{4} The trial trench evaluation also revealed a series of quarry pits in the centre of the car park area [Mike Shaw pers comm].
