Summary
Excavation of site for a temporary telephone exchange in 1949/50 found evidence of 'the top of a stone turret buried 18ft below road level'. Originally associated with 'The Tower', but it is in the wrong location and the depth at which it was observed is problematic; unlikely to be archaeological.

Full Description
{1} Early English stone turret found buried 1949/50. Excavation by PO contractors for the new temporary exchange showed the top of a stone turrent 18' below road level. Reported to H Frost in 1950. A note of 1980 states that it does not match up with the position of The Tower on Speeds map; also the depth is problematic.
{2} Early English, appeared to have been burned. No other finds recorded. [SP 7587 6051]
