Monument record 4844 - Possible Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age/Roman enclosures, near Primrose Hill Farm

Please read our .

Summary

In 2025, a geophysical survey identified multiple curvilinear, linear and rectilinear anomalies forming several possible enclosures, including curvilinear groups resembling a Middle Iron Age banjo enclosure, a potential Romano‑British rectangular enclosure with internal divisions, additional partial enclosures in the centre and southwest likely representing infilled ditches, and several penannular features in the south that may indicate barrows.

Full Description

{1} In the northern corner of Area 1, several curvilinear have been identified with a positive magnetic response. They appear to form an enclosure with an opening in the southwestern corner from which linear anomalies extend. In the southeastern corner of Area 1, a concentration of curvilinear anomalies has been discovered, which form an irregular elliptical shape. There is an opening in the northwestern side from which parallel linear anomalies extend. The morphology of these two groups of anomalies are suggestive of enclosures, with appearing similar to a middle Iron Age ‘Banjo’ enclosure.
In the southern part of Area 1 the survey has identified several linear and rectilinear anomalies typical of cut features with an enhanced fill, which appear to form a rectangular enclosure with internal divisions. The rectilinear morphology suggests a possible Romano-British origin, but could also be of later date.
A small focus of linear and rectilinear anomalies towards the centre of Area 1 appear to form partial enclosures and these too are possibly archaeological in origin. A larger partial enclosure which appears in the data as two rectilinear anomalies has been detected in the southwestern corner of Area 1 and is most likely an infilled ditch and may be associated with the enclosure discussed above. Several penannular anomalies have been detected in the south of the survey area these may be the remains of barrows
