Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking survey identified a 'mighty site', middle Iron Age in date. 266 body sherds, handmade, very shelly, most black, but some with brown, a few flat bases and devolved carination near rim (in 2 bags a few burnished and little veg temper. Plus loomweight (ceramic), 2 & 5 likely pieces, one quern, from SP 5418 3786, in a dense sandstone schist, pink or burnt and one SP 5412 3782 in white magnesian limestone. A note in archive reads: 'Large middle Iron Age settlement located to the south-west of Steane Grounds Farm. The site coveres an area of about 1 1/2 acres. More pottery and objects could have been found if more time was spent on site. The area was unmistakeable by the darkness of the soil. Most of the pottery was shelly ware. The interesting thing about this site is that an earlier Neolithic site underlies it, most probably well-preserved. Flints were found on site and added to the Neolithic collection from on and around this site. The author noted that Neolithic features may survive below the Iron Age settlement.
