Full Description

{1} Has some 'good decorative glass'. The architect Keightley Cobb lived here for many years. Along with his master, Alexander Anderson, a rear staircase was added in 1914-5.

{2} The front bay of No 70 was added before 1916, so possibly part of the same alterations- a photo dating to 1916 shows No 70 in the background with the bay. By 1916 'a number of neighbouring houses had recently been improved, including number 70, ‘Sarnia’, by his friend, the architect Keighley [sic] Cobb. Possibly in consultation with Cobb, Bassett-Lowke got plans drawn up by a Scottish architect long resident in Northampton, Alexander Ellis Anderson. These plans were submitted to the Planning Authority on 1 June 1916. They show a flat-roofed bay extension at the front, and a two story flat-roofed extension at the back. They also show the staircase moved around through 90 degrees'

{3} Address to Friends of 78 Derngate by Dr Sylvia Pinches: 'In 1912 Mr. Keightley Cobb, architect, added the more elegant bay to the front of his house, ‘Sarnia’ number 70.'
