Full Description

{1} CFA Archaeology Ltd carried out an archaeological watching brief in 2016. The watching brief has revealed only 19th century deposits showing that any earlier archaeological deposits and any medieval remains that might derive from Blackfriars, probably lie at a much greater depth. The 19th century layer of made ground exposed in the footprint of the new building is likely to have been laid as levelling in preparation for the construction of buildings along Little Cross Street. These buildings are shown on OS maps surveyed between 1883 and 1923-4 prior to the construction of St Peter’s House. The well, which is cut into this deposit, is also 19th century and is would have been a water supply for one of these buildings. In all likelihood it was situated in one of their back yards. The exposed wall foundation is also likely to be related to these buildings and was perhaps the footings of a building or yard wall. With no deeper investigative works it has not been possible to ascertain if these 19th century building remains and deposits have truncated earlier archaeology or have simply been built on top of them.
