Full Description
{1} The Lower Springhead was one of two springs found during wider archaeological excavation ahead of development. The Lower Springhead had been modified in the early Roman period with the construction of a wattle fence and a gravel/cobble surface. The fence was interpreted as a way of ensuring stock was kept away from the spring. Subsequently, a large pit was dug. It was lined with a mortared limestone wall which was further lined with timber planks, driven or piled into the ground. A managed drainage system was also created to aid the flow of water out of the tank structure.
